What Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles are available?
A Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) is a specially converted vehicle from a standard car, so that it can accommodate a wheelchair. And so that wheelchair users can travel whilst remaining in their wheelchair, either as a car passenger or as the car driver.
The size, shape and design of the Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle varies, as it depends on the original vehicle that is used for the conversion, but all Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles have been specifically designed for easy access and travelling safety.
Standard WAV features include:
· A built-in ramp or sometimes a lift on larger vehicles
· Access from the side or the rear of the Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle
· A lowered floor or raised roof to enable sufficient headroom or driver/passenger/s
· Wheelchair tie-downs
By large, there are 3 different sizes:
This size of Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle usually has a ramp, and no lift, to gain access to the vehicle. They can have at least 1 rear seat and can accommodate up to 4 including the wheelchair passenger.
If you have a large wheelchair or travel on a regular basis with 4+ passengers, or perhaps have some equipment that you need to travel with you, then the medium sized WAV may best suit your needs.
If you are a regular traveller, or just want to be, with numerous passengers and so need a small number of seats. Or if you have a large or heavy wheelchair, and a lot of equipment that you need to keep with you, then the larger size Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle is probably the best fit for you.
