The Warm Home Discount scheme
The Warm Home Discount Scheme, was first launched in April 2011, and it pays a £120 rebate on a household electricity bill each year for qualifying customers, typically those who qualify are on means-tested benefits and pensioners on low incomes. Those who qualify with pre-payment meters receive the money in Post Office vouchers. The Warm Home Discount Scheme discount does not affect your Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment.
The Warm Home Discount Scheme will gradually replace the current social tariffs that are offered by energy firms. Social tariffs are offered to people who are on the lowest incomes. But eligibility criteria for the Warm Home Discount Scheme vary between companies and are more restrictive than the social tariffs. As it means that whilst the scheme helps protect low-income pensioners by law, many other eligible customers who were on a social tariff will discover they will get no help as the funding has run out. As the discount is issued on a first-come, first-served basis.
