How the Motability Car Scheme Works
How the Motability Car Scheme Works
The Motability Car Scheme enables disabled people to exchange their Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance or their War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement to obtain a new car. Are you eligible? If you receive the Higher Rate Mobility Component (HRMC) of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) (which is currently £54.05 per week) or the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS) (currently £60.40 per week), you are eligible to join the Motability Car Scheme. Even if you do not drive yourself, you can apply for a car as a passenger and propose 2 other people as your drivers. Why join? When you join Motability you get more than just the car, you also get on-going help and support to ensure you can continue enjoy driving. Benefits of joining the Car Scheme A brand new car of your choice every 3 years. Motability contacts you shortly before your current lease is due to expire, and if you continue with Motability, you can choose a car for your next 3 year contract (provided you are still eligible). Contract Hire Via the contract hire scheme you can lease a new car supplied by a Motability accredited dealer for at least 3 years. The Insurance, routine servicing, and breakdown cover is also included in the lease. You may have to pay for the fitting/installation and removal of any adaptations. You can apply if you have 12 months or more of your Disability Living Allowance award remaining. If your award is not renewed during the full length of your chosen scheme , your car will have to be returned. At the end of the period the car is returned to Motability Operations, the not for profit company, who operate the Motability Car Scheme. Is there any financial help or VAT relief? If money is a problem when financing the car or adaptations for the car, Motability may be able to provide you with a grant. This will either be via their own charitable fund or the Specialised Vehicle Funds, which they administer for the Government. Disabled people don’t have to pay VAT on the cost of hiring a car through the Motability Scheme. The cost of any work involved in adapting a vehicle for a disabled person is also eligible for VAT Relief.
